I'm headed to PR for a week and I'm staying at Jobos. I've been watching the forecast for the area and it looks like its going to be fairly big. I've never surfed over a coral reef before, let alone in double overhead surf, or anywhere in PR for that matter. I'm looking to play it safe and find somewhere smaller but the swell seems to be too east for spots like Crash Boat, Rincon, Gas Chambers etc. So does anyone know of a spot that is close to Jobos that will be smaller or more manageable?

If the swell is pumping it should definitely wrap around to the west at least a little bit. I surfed middles on a double overhead day and was freaked out (also my first session in legit size plus sketched out by the reef) but found the locals to be surprisingly understanding and encouraging. (was also off-season so that may have helped) I also had the pleasure of 2 gorgeous women in g-strings shredding it up, thus making me feel like a complete douche if I didn't at least try and have a good time out there!
Anyway at least at middles the reef is hard but mostly smooth. Surfed Maria's every day as well and found the same thing. Just don't put your feet down and you should be cool. I didn't surf there, but wilderness is definitely a spot to check if you're sketched out. Also remember that the reef helps the wave break more consistantly so it's easier to drop in and you'll most likely have more time to get your shit together and enjoy the wave. I'm psyched for you man.... I had the time of my life down there.

definitely listen to the post above-jobos won't hold up to anything huge so wilderness is probably the best bet. wildos breaks out far and quite deep so it's not scary at all, you can check out the bottom if you dive down far enough>there's one spot to paddle out from , a keyhole that you should follow the locals through-it's hard to come back in there so you have to aim for this broken wall that is sticking out (it's to the left of the keyhole). it's quite obvious that the peak furthest right is biggest and it gets smaller until it's a different named peak.. jobos is known for localism, but really the guys (and girls) are super friendly- make friends with Control, and if you are not a kook he will be the best guide and friend you could ask for during your trip. if you get out before the crowd and settle into the peak (right next to the rock-like touching the rock) they won't make you go away  have fun!
